Layer Your Bathroom Lighting
When you layer light, you ensure the space is well-lit and offers a balance in lighting. There aren't any dark shadows lurking due to no light penetration. By layering your bathroom lighting during your bathroom remodel, you'll be able to have the light you need for all of your bathroom tasks.
Backlighting
Backlighting, admittedly, is more for looks and style than function. However, a well-lit piece of art or mirror can truly make your bathroom sizzle and is well worth the effort of adding. Backlighting adds a unique flair to any bathroom space.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR OUTDOOR LIVING AREA
It can be difficult to get outside during the winter months, especially during the work week when it's often already dark by the time you get home. While the weather of course plays a factor in year-round ourdoor living, proper lighting - and maybe some oudoor heaters or a fire pit - enable you to enjoy your outdoor living space throughout the year.
The first thing to consider when lighting your outdoor space is safety. Ensure your pathways and steps are properly illuminated. Doing this will naturally provide a warm glow around your outdoor space and make the area more welcoming. Also, consider installing sconces to frame doorways, and redirect floodlights so that they do not shine directly into visitors' faces.
Lighting isn't just about functionality though. Today's lighting designers are developing incredible outdoor, wet-rated fixtures that will add style and beauty to your outdoor space.
In a recent interview with Executive Editor of Lighting magazine Samantha Hart, Quoizel President & CEO Rick Seidman explained the verstility and creativity offered in today's outdoor light fixtures. "Whatever the decor theme is for outside, pick a fixture that works for that space," Seidman says. more
ENJOY YOUR BEST HOME
Bring out the best in your home with the right light to accessorize your style
These days people are spending more time enjoying their homes, inside and out. Put your home in the best light and pull everything together with these simple tips:
Light in layers. Lighting is most effective if it utilizes overhead, task and ambient light sources. While this idea is commonplace for inside lighting, it's just as important for outdoor lighting where there are not typically boundaries and borders. By having three light layers (overhead, task and ambient), appropriate areas are illuminated for the intended interactions and use of that space.
Create a safe and secure environment. Enhance security with lighting on stairs, around toe-kick areas, in dark corners, and near outside entrances. When lighting outside areas , aim lights away from doors and not directly into people's eyes. Make sure any outdoor fixtures are weather rated.
Reduce glare. Inside install dimmers on any lights that require flexible control over the light level, such as bathrooms and hallways. Outside, light walkways and paths with light that is cast downward and with fixtures that are hoodedmore
5 SIMPLE TIPS FOR CREATING A COZY HOME THIS FALL
This fall and winter more than ever, many of us will be spending most of our time at home. Creating a comfortable and cozy space to relax and enjoy family time will help make the days spent indoors more enjoyable. While it’s fun to create a festive ambiance to match the season, it’s not always practical or feasible to completely change a room’s décor. Use these simple tips to create a space that will carry you through cozy autumn nights and beyond.
1. Layer Up
We all know that layering clothes in the winter is a great way to stay warm, but did you know layers of light can also help keep you cozy? Incorporating three layers of light, including ambient or overall, task and accent lighting not only improves the functionality of your space, but also adds a comforting, warm feeling to your home.
2. Consider Color
As the leaves change and the warm colors of fall make their way into our home décor, adjusting the color of your lighting can help create the perfect setting for evenings by the fire and family gatherings. LED light bulbs come in a variety of color temperatures, and some are even adjustable to fit different needs. To get a warm, comforting glow, look for a color temperature around 2,700 to 3,000 Kelvin. more
STYLE SPOTLIGHT: MODERN MOUNTAIN
Mountain home design style may conjure up thoughts of moose heads, bearskin rugs, and rustic cabin décor, but that look has had its day. Enter Modern Mountain, a streamlined, contemporary style with distinct connections to the natural environment that takes the mountain home to an elevated level of design. Designers of both new construction and home renovations are applying a clean-lined aesthetic that inspires a relaxing connection with nature but remains in keeping with a mountain home's original intent of providing a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
A bond with natural surroundings is paramount in Modern Mountain home design. Builders seek out local materials like quarried stone, reclaimed or fresh-cut timber, and salvaged metals with a patina of age, and combine them with simple lines and an overall contemporary aesthetic. A subtle color palette takes its cues from native materials, incorporating rich neutral colors like grays, browns, taupe, and creams.
Modern Mountain homes often have open floor plans with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, large windows, and skylights that offer premium access to the sweeping scenic vistas outside. Vaulted ceilings punctuated by wood beams, exposed rock fireplaces, and an uncluttered layout make a statement in the interior floor space. Lighting fixtures have open and airy designs, geometric frameworks, and sparkling glass shades that don't obstruct the field of vision to the spectacular scenery.more
LIGHTING TRENDS TO LOVE IN 2020
Each year brings a profusion of new design trends for the home, and new lighting designs play a crucial part in setting style. Lighting manufacturers launch hundreds of products every January at Lightovation, the industry's largest trade show, where discerning showroom buyers select the most popular styles for their market. Here's a sneak preview of a few of the fabulous new lighting trends that will brighten up homes in 2020.
Natural Materials
Emphasis on nature and sustainability continues to trend in home design, as protecting the world's environment is top of mind. Organic, natural, and good-for-the-environment materials that are also inherently tactile, warm, and cozy are perfect for creating protected, serene, and calm interiors. Look for open-weave shades in natural fibers like rattan and wicker on pendants, chandeliers, and sconces. Environmentally ethical wood is likewise a logical choice for lighting designs, and lighting with details such as wooden bead swags are especially hot. Both genuine and faux stone and organically textured glass are seen as accents on fixtures or even used as the dominant material, infusing dimension and style into the piece.

STYLE EVOLUTION: MODERN FARMHOUSE
First came the farmhouse design trend, a humble, nurturing style that is a nostalgic throwback to a simpler time. Early farmhouse style was born of necessity: farmers used the plentiful wood and natural materials like stone found on their land to build simple, practical homes. As time went on, building and décor materials became widely available, and farmhouses gave more attention to creating a cozy and pleasant atmosphere. Today, the farmhouse look incorporates apron sinks, reclaimed wood furniture, shiplap, and traditional fabrics, which were staples of the practical life of original farm homes.
But nothing remains the same forever. Trends evolve, and in recent days farmhouse has grown into a style coined "modern farmhouse." The beloved aspects of farmhouse styling are mixed with modern and even industrial elements that elevate the trend to a fresh, contemporary look.
Glass, metal, warm wood, and other simple industrial materials pair with the vintage touches, organic materials, and handmade pieces that are signature farmhouse elements. Lighting moves from rustic iron chandeliers to more sophisticated styling of geometric, open-cage designs, mixed metals, and wood accents. Outdoor lighting is often taken inside, with larger exterior lanterns and wall lights adding a wow factor to kitchens and living areas.more
DINING ROOM REVOLUTION: ARE FORMAL DINING ROOMS BACK?
Just the word “chandelier” can bring to mind an ornate, candle-bedecked light glimmering over the center of a dining room table. While the dining room may be the traditional spot to place a chandelier, today's trends are all about finding unexpected ways to use classic lighting.
Quite simply, chandeliers transform a room, no matter where they are hung. Chandeliers are often found in living rooms as a statement-making focal point in the center of the room, but one of the latest trends is to install an eye-catching chandelier directly over a sofa. And it’s even better if you have two sofas with two chandeliers overhead, providing a beautiful touch of symmetry.
Take a pair of chandeliers into the bedroom, where they will bring balance to the room when hung over each nightstand. Not only does it add an aura of elegance, it’s a space saver when a spot is freed up on the nightstand where a table lamp used to stand. Or install a single, large chandelier over the bed to double as a general light source as well as adding to the overall ambiance of the room.
The bathroom is an increasingly common place to find a chandelier. Hang a unique chandelier to add general lighting to a large batroom. Or, add a gorgeous chandeliers over the tub to give a spa-like feel to the room. Just remember that it must be damp or wet-rated for use in the bathroom, and with 8 feet of clearance from top of the tub to the bottom of the chandelier. more

EASY LIGHTING IDEAS TO WELCOME THE SEASON
The days are growing shorter and darker, and less daylight means it’s time to use lighting and seasonal elements to brighten up the home. Here’s how to impress guests as soon as they walk in the door with a few easy ideas that don't involve a visit from the electrician.
A natural place to start is with the front entrance. Whether it's a stately foyer or a simple front hall, add some pleasing autumn décor. Bring the outdoors inside by using seasonal flowers, pumpkins and gourds, leaves, branches or boughs to decorate a hall table. Surround the display with two or three lanterns, and fill them with battery-operated fairy lights or candles. Bring in a table or floor lamp from another room, and switch the bulb to one that offers a warmer color (2700K to 3000K), giving a cozy feeling to the space.
Boost the seasonal charm throughout the home by repurposing household items that might typically not be considered a decorative accessory. For a vintage touch, adorn a wooden ladder with folded throws, napkins or cloth in seasonal colors. Fill bushel baskets and galvanized pails and with pumpkins, corncobs, and mums. Add battery-operated fairy lights for an extra twinkle without added electrical cords, offering a neat, clean and safe look. more
LANDSCAPE LIGHTING ADDS BEAUTY AND SAFETY
Adding the perfect amount of exterior lighting will brighten up a dark landscape, giving a home after-dark curb appeal while also providing safety for visitors and family. And just like inside the home, exterior lighting should be designed using layers of light.
The first layer will be the ambient or general layer of light that provides overall illumination. This layer typically uses light sources that are positioned along pathways, as well as lighting that washes light up and down the walls of the home.
Stagger pathway lights about six to eight feet apart to offer just enough light to see while walking, and to avoid the “runway effect” that can occur when the lights are evenly distributed along the path. Illuminate stairways by installing stair step lights directly into stair risers for safety as well as to add a nice focal point to decks, patios and garden paths. Placing tape lighting underneath each stair step is another option to highlight stairways and increase safety.
To wash the house with light, use lighting installed in the soffits of the home’s exterior, or use a mix of down and up lights to spread the light across the entire surface for a balanced look. more
LIGHTING TIPS FOR OPEN FLOOR PLANS
Many home designs incorporate an open floor plan, where cooking, dining, and entertaining are enjoyed in the same space. Even a small space can feel bigger and brighter when walls are opened up, and the light is let in. Planning the right lighting is a crucial part of designing beautiful, light-filled, open-concept spaces.
Consider the architectural features of the open floor plan, such as high ceilings, lack of interior walls, and numerous windows, as all of these factors add to the overall light of the space. To avoid over-lighting an open floor plan, think in layers: ambient, task, and accent lighting. The first layer, ambient lighting, provides the general lighting for the space. Recessed, linear, flush mounts or similar fixtures are good choices here, serving an ambient source of light and helping to guide the flow from room to room.
Next, select task lighting. In the kitchen, choose fixtures that direct light onto countertops, islands, cooking surfaces, and other work areas. Undercabinet tape and puck lighting, track lighting, pendant lighting, and even recessed lighting are excellent selections, as they will give the ideal amount of light to complete tasks safely and efficiently. more
DESIGNING IN COASTAL STYLE
Every day can be a beach day when your home's décor has a light and airy Coastal style. Sun-soaked colors and natural materials and the liberal use of white epitomize the new coastal aesthetic: it's far from the traditional, nautical styling of the past.
With popularity stretching well beyond the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts, today's coastal design is about bringing in colors and styling that call forth a soothing and inviting environment, creating a haven from the hectic pace of daily life. Through the use of natural light, soft tones, organic textures, and a clean look, it's meant to evoke the breeziness of the beach.
Less is more in coastal design, so try for uncluttered interiors in a neutral color palette that reflects and enhances natural light sources. By paring down and opting for a minimalist vibe, interiors will feel light and open, as if there's no boundary between inside and outdoors.
Lighting fixture choices should complement natural light and reflect this breezy, open lifestyle. Lantern-style fixtures, typically thought of as traditional exterior lights are now interpreted for interior lighting, with lighter colors, and large, open designs that cross the boundaries of many design styles. Or, pull in some nautical detailing with industrial fixtures inspired by ship signal lights. more
TIPS FOR LIGHTING OUTDOOR KITCHENS
Indoor-outdoor living is more than just a trend- it's become a lifestyle. Many homeowners are choosing to bring the functionality of their inside kitchen to their outdoor space so that they can enjoy the luxury of cooking and dining in the open air.
A well-designed outdoor kitchen will add value to a home and extend the length of the outdoor cooking season. It can be as simple as placing countertops near an outdoor grill, or as elaborate as a kitchen designed with a sink, stove, refrigerator, and even a smoker. Having a proper lighting plan is critical to ensure that the kitchen is just as functional at night as it is during the day, setting the perfect ambiance and adding visibility and safety.
Just like inside the home, properly layered light is a necessity outdoors. Begin by planning the ambient layer, the first layer of light fixtures to provide a soft wash of general, balanced illumination. For outdoor kitchens in a protected area, select ceiling mounted fixtures or a ceiling fan with a built-in light. Landscape lighting also adds to the ambient light of the outdoor kitchen space as it casts light gently across a yard, adding to the overall visibility.
Task lighting is the second and most critical layer for an outdoor kitchen. This layer should provide sufficient illumination to prepare, cook, and serve food. Install focused sources of light above working areas such as countertops, grills, and sinks. Recessed downlights are an excellent choice as they reduce light scattering and provide direct light without interfering with the mood. more
THREE STAND-OUT 2019 LIGHTING TRENDS
From new finishes to new inspirations, to products that typically aren't even considered to be lighting, there are many notable design trends in today’s lighting market. Here’s a roundup of three notable trends that are “in” for 2019 and beyond.
Trend One: Brutalist Lighting
First of all, what is Brutalism? A step beyond industrial, Brutalism was coined as a design period after World War II, when low-cost housing and government buildings were built of primarily raw, unrefined materials. The designs were meant to project a sense of strength born of hard edges and a substantial, fortress-like feel.
Hallmarks of Brutalist lighting are jagged shapes, rough textures, patinated metallic finishes, and asymmetrical organic designs. The overall aesthetic is one of hand-worked, hand-crafted and hewn from raw material - the opposite of lighting created through modern technological methods.
Trend Two: Black Finishes
Black is the new Black. An outstanding neutral, lighting finished in black serves a dual purpose: it’s ideal used on an understated fixture, serving as an accessory to a room’s design; and it’s also quite at home used on a statement piece of lighting. Many mixed-metal lighting pieces incorporate black, as it is the perfect foil to cool tones, lending a modern edge to mixes such as black and chrome; and an elegant statement in lighting when mixed with warm tones such as gold. more
TREND ALERT: MIXED-METAL ACCENTS TO LIGHT EVERY ROOM
The days of matching the same metal color for lighting, cabinet hardware and plumbing are over. Today, designers and homeowners are getting creative and letting their personal style shine with mixed metals. Although this may seem complicated, there is a simple recipe for successfully mixing metals: pick a dominant metal finish for the room and coordinate accent metals with that. Try for a 70/30 ratio, where the dominant metal choice is on 70 percent of the lighting, accessories, hardware and plumbing, and add one or two metallic colors to make up 30 percent of the accent choices.
As with the rest of the accents in the home, mixed metals are trending in lighting, and many lighting manufacturers offer fixtures that blend two, and sometimes three different metal finish colors. Choosing one of these fixtures is a great place to start a mixed metal adventure.
When selecting the primary metal, keep the room’s overall style in mind. For example, for a modern look, chrome may be a good selection. For a traditional room, brass may be the way to go.
Consider the tones of the metal. There are warm metal tones like brushed brass, gold, and bronze; and there are cool metal tones such as chrome, polished nickel, and silver. And don’t forget black. Black is one of the trendiest finishes on the market today, and it mixes beautifully with most metal finishes. more
ADVANTAGES OF USING LEDS Do they really last ten years?
Although LED technology is commonplace today, confusion still arises for the home user when it comes choosing LEDs over traditional light bulbs. When faced with the question of whether or not to switch to LEDs, consider that though more expensive than traditional incandescent bulbs, LEDs have myriad advantages over traditional incandescent bulbs.
LEDs last 10-20 years in home applications and can be used in existing fixtures with typical screw-in options or, if necessary, retrofit kits. The long lifespan of LEDs makes them a cost-effective option that, in the long run, actually results in savings in excess of the initial purchase price.
Another attractive draw in using LEDs is the design flexibility in the new integrated LED fixtures. These have the LED built into the fixture itself. With integrated lighting, the LEDs are placed on a module, such as a panel, strip or disc, inside the fixture as opposed to using a standard bulb. Since the light source is compact and embedded into the fixture, it has a slim profile. Without the need to design around the larger bulbs and cables used in traditional light fixtures, manufacturers have practically unlimited design options. A disadvantage of fixtures with the LED built in is a higher upfront cost, as an entire fixture has to be purchased and installed. However, the beautiful and unusual design capability of LED integrated fixtures usually outweighs the initial price tag. If the possibility of an expired LED leading to prematurely discarding an entire fixture is a concern, don’t worry. Many lighting manufacturers offer extended warranties on integrated LED fixtures, covering the possibility of LED failure, although the chances of premature failure are minimal.more
KITCHEN LIGHTING TIPS TO ACHIEVE FUNCTION AND STYLE
Today’s kitchens are more than just a place to prepare food, they are gathering spaces for family and friends, serving different purposes throughout the day. The growing popularity of open-concept homes have also made kitchens the center of the living space, opening up to family rooms, dining rooms, entryways and more. Therefore, achieving ultimate style and functionality in the kitchen is more important than ever before.
Cabinetry, countertops, door pulls, backsplashes, appliances and decorative features all play a key role in the design and functionality of a kitchen, but none of those features are complete without proper lighting. The right kitchen lighting will accomplish a variety of things, from increasing functionality to complementing and enhancing the style and design of your home.
To light your kitchen properly, you’ll want to start by considering these three layers of light - general/ambient, task and accent. These layers are key to making any room more functional, and this is especially true in a kitchen.
Many kitchens feature recessed lighting as the first layer, and it can serve as more than just general lighting when installed and planned correctly. When planning the layout of recessed lighting, you must take into consideration cabinet position, task areas, and the overall lighting needs of the space. A professional at a lighting showroom can help you through this. For larger projects, such as a new build or complete kitchen remodel, you may want to start by calling your local ALA-member showroom to determine what you need to bring along with you to make the most out of your visit. more
ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR LIGHTING YOUR LIVING ROOM
Your living room is likely one of the most frequently used rooms in your home. From relaxing with family and friends, to watching television, to reading a good book, this room serves many purposes, and proper lighting is key to making your space multi-functional.
As with every room in the home, layers of light are crucial. To get the most use and enjoyment in your living area, be sure it has all three main layers of light: ambient, task and accent.
Ambient lighting provides general illumination to a room, allowing you to use the space. Task lighting is needed in the working areas of the home. In a living space, this may be next to a reading chair, or over a coffee table. Task lighting should be bright enough to allow you to see without straining your eyes. Accent lighting is the final requirement to a properly lit room. This lighting draws attention to artwork or architectural details.
Lamps are a common element in a living room lighting design. Both table and floor lamps are often utilized next to sofas or chairs to provide task lighting or overall illumination. Consider the size of the living space and other furniture in the room when determining the proper scale for your lamps. To create a dramatic flair, incorporate different styles of lamps in the same space. If a lamp is being utilized for a task, such as reading, position the light so that it comes from behind the shoulder. For floor lamps, especially in higher-traffic areas, make sure the lamp is heavy and sturdy enough to withstand minor bumps.more
'TIS THE SEASON FOR CRYSTAL
The holidays are upon us, which means sparkling, shimmering lights are all around. While these beautiful lights and holiday decorations bring warmth and glow to the season, they can leave your normal home decor seeming lackluster in comparison. If you’re looking to add a little glamour to your house that can last all year long, consider a beautiful crystal chandelier.
Crystal chandeliers are no longer reserved for over the dining room table or grand entryway. Today, crystal chandeliers and other crystal fixtures come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles, which lend themselves to different applications throughout the home.
One of our favorite places to add a crystal chandelier is in the bedroom. Nothing says luxury like a stunning piece hung over your bed. Chandeliers also lend themselves to the perfect reading nook accent. If you don’t have space for either of these options, smaller chandeliers or crystal pendants hung over the bedside tables add a unique touch to a bedroom and open up space on the table by removing the need for a lamp.
While the bathroom may not be the first space that comes to mind when thinking of crystal chandeliers, they can add a spa-like beauty to even the smallest space. Consider hanging a grand chandelier over your bathtub, or place smaller crystal pendants on either side of the bathroom mirror. KEY MEASUREMENTS YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN SHOPPING FOR LIGHTING
Purchasing lighting for a home is an exciting experience. Lighting is the finishing touch to a room’s design, the element that changes the mood of the room and gives life to the space. There are many options for home lighting, and it can be intimidating to think about making the right decisions for each room. However, local lighting showrooms are here to help with design inspiration, lessons on the latest technology, and selecting the perfect lighting for a space.
Before visiting a lighting showroom it’s helpful to prepare with some basic information about the project.
Some of the most important questions the showroom sales staff will ask are questions about size. So, measure, measure, measure! Be prepared with basic information about your space.
Ceiling height: When shopping for a hanging light for a high ceiling, make a note of the room’s ceiling height and the length and width of the room. If a fixture is already hanging in the space, give an estimation of its size. Bring pictures of the space, making sure that the picture gives some perspective on the size of the room.
Fixture Size: Keep in mind that the new fixture needs to fit appropriately in the space. A grand chandelier, for example, will not fit in a foyer with an 8- or 9-foot ceiling height. Whether redecorating or building a brand-new house, making the proper lighting choices will add function, personality and a special flair to any room.

Make the most of the shopping experience by taking some time to learn lighting terminology before visiting a lighting showroom. To begin, let’s talk about the different types of lighting fixtures .
Hanging lights are called chandeliers or pendants (not “pendulum,” a typical mispronunciation). Traditional chandeliers can be elaborate in design, chain hung and have arms (such as a crystal chandelier) where modern chandeliers and pendants may have a cleaner silhouette and are hung from single rods, wires or chains.more

CREATE A COZY HOME WITH HYGGE
Want to make your home as cozy, calm and relaxing as possible? Try hygge (pronounced: hue-gah), a Danish lifestyle trend that has captured the imagination of the interior design profession. More than just a décor trend, hygge is a state of mind – one of cozy contentment while appreciating the simple things that bring joy to your life.
Lighting is a key element in hygge, which takes a minimalist concept and punctuates it with warmth, texture and glow. One of the most effective ways to create a warm and cozy atmosphere is by the placement and adjustment of lighting in the home.
The gentle glow of candles, which symbolizes the hygge trend, is complemented by soft, mood-provoking electric lighting. With hygge, interiors are lit to create a pleasant ambiance. Light and shadow are equally important elements, as they contribute to a feeling of warmth and naturalness.
For hygge, use several light sources to scatter warm light throughout a space. Table and floor lamps, wall sconces, and pendant lights provide light as well as a soothing and inviting feel, giving plenty of options for different moods and settings.
Transform space with shadow and light by placing lamps in spots chosen to highlight a room’s decorative elements. Adding a few softly lit pendant lights brings a serene, diffuse glow that creates areas of darkness as well as light, increasing the sense of tranquility.more
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN SHOPPING FOR LED BULBS
Today, LED bulbs are the most efficient, longest lasting, and often the most suitable choice for residential lighting. However, the slightly higher upfront cost, along with the variations in light output and color temperature, can make the switch to LEDs feel somewhat daunting.
The best place to start for the highest-quality LED bulbs is an ALA-member lighting showroom . The experts there are well versed in all aspects of lighting and can help ensure the bulbs you choose are compatible with specific fixtures and controls already installed in your home. With that said, having a grasp on the basics can help make your visit to a showroom more productive and successful. Here are a few things to consider when purchasing LEDs.
1. Jargon
It used to be that simply looking at the watts on a bulb package was sufficient. With LEDs, there are few additional things you want to consider.
Lumens: This will tell you how bright the bulb is. You may be surprised to know that the old measurement of watts actually told you little about how bright the bulb would be. Watts only measure the amount of power a bulb draws, and bulbs with the same wattage may put out very different amounts of light. Lumens tell you how much light a bulb emits; the higher the number, the brighter the light.more
FOLLOW THE TREND: NEW WAYS TO LIGHT THE BATHROOM
While functionality is still key, stylish and unique bathroom lighting designs are becoming increasingly popular. To meld the two, we recommend utilizing creative ways of installing fixtures and layering light.
The bathroom is used for various, task-oriented activities from applying makeup, to shaving, to getting dressed. Therefore, proper lighting is first and foremost when producing a bathroom lighting layout.
To create an illuminated sink area, the days of just a simple bath bar above the mirror are in the past. Today, people are installing fixtures around the mirror in creative ways to add style and function. For example, try installing swing-arm sconces on either side of a bathroom mirror. These versatile fixtures come in a variety of styles and can be moved around according to your needs. Vertical lights on either side of a bathroom mirror provide the most even illumination, so utilizing wall-mounted sconces or bath bars on the sides of a mirror are also popular trends.
Layers of light are important in every room in the house, and the bathroom is no exception. Recessed cans in the bathroom serve the important role of providing overall illumination, especially in a large master bath. A stunning statement chandelier can also brighten up the space and add a personal touch to the overall bathroom design. Consider hanging a chandelier over the bathtub for a dramatic and elegant look.more
REARRANGE FIXTURES TO CREATE A UNIQUE LOOK
Many of today's light fixtures lend themselves to various types of installations. Some fixtures have multiple lights that can hang clustered together or, with the addition of a support frame, can be spread out in a more traditional chandelier fashion. Pendants can be grouped in a number of ways without requiring multiple holes in the ceiling by using a canopy accessory that attaches to a single electrical box.
Fixtures can also be hung in unexpected ways to add visual interest and function to any room. Consider flanking your fireplace with sconces, or hanging pendants above your bedside table to save space and add style.more

4 WAYS TO ADD FUNCTIONALITY TO YOUR HOME WITHOUT SACRIFICING STYLE
When it comes to lighting and connectivity at home, everyone has pet peeves. Whether it’s lights being left on in an empty room or the phone charger somehow always magically disappearing, high-tech, yet stylish and functional controls offer several solutions to help combat these everyday problems.
1. Lights carelessly being left on: Constantly reminding children (or your partner) to turn of the bedroom lights? Motion sensor lighting is the way to go. Motion sensing controls are a great way to save energy and add functionality to any space. These controls don’t have to look like the traditional ones you see at businesses or your office. Controls like the adorne by Legrand Motion Sensor Auto On/Off switch have a sleek and modern design to add a stylish touch to any space.
2. Phone Charger Magically Disappearing: Today’s control products make scouring your home for a phone charger a thing of the past. Replacing your standard outlets with new ones that contain wireless charging ports is an instance cord and clutter free way to charge all of your devices. Most of these are designed to replace any standard outlet in your home without rewiring, and are compatible with a variety of devices. more
LAYERED LIGHTING LOOKS LOVELIEST
When it comes to outfitting a room with lighting, most homeowners start with the overhead lighting – either one main fixture or a grouping of pendants. From there, lighting experts suggest adding two additional layers: task and accent.
Task lighting can be achieved with sconces, portable lamps or recessed fixtures. Accent lighting all depends on the item or area to be highlighted. It may be inside, above or under cabinets. Another example of accent lighting could be mini spotlights directed at artwork or a shadowy area. Once each light layer is covered, the use of dimmers will maximize the room’s functionality and beauty.

FIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING OUTDOOR FIXTURES
Outdoor spaces are no longer afterthoughts in a home's design and decor plan. The outdoors set the stage for the rest of the home, create a welcoming ambience, and provide a space to relax, gather with friends and family, or steal a few quiet moments away in the midst of a hectic day. An outdoor area, whether it is a small porch or a large patio, needs to be styled and decorated to match both the functional and practical requirements of the space, as well as the cohesive design aesthetics that tie it in with the rest of the home.
When it comes to choosing exterior lighting fixtures, here are five key things to consider:
1. Function: The primary purpose of exterior lighting is to make outdoor areas safer and more easily accessible after dark.
2. Durability: Is the fixture wet rated? Does its finish hold up against the elements be it harsh sunlight, humidity, rain or snow? Will it resist fading and rusting?
3. Style: Does the fixture complement the architectural style of the house, the type and color of the exterior walls and the overall mood of the space?
4. Compliance: Outdoor fixtures need to comply with HOA guidelines. Fixtures that produce a harsh glare, cause excessive light pollution or deviate from the community’s architectural and aesthetic style are not ideal choices.more
LIGHT UP THE NIGHT
Lighting a sidewalk or other pathway is attractive and a safety feature of outdoor lighting. Make sure any outdoor fixture casts its glow downward, so that is does not obscure the vision of you or your guests.
Another key tip for outdoor lighting is to avoid pushing light into a window – yours or a neighbors. The goal is for the light to illuminate only the area outside.
Visit your local ALA-member showroom for more tips on lighting your outdoor walkways. They'll also be able to show you all the latest in stylish and energy-efficient products.more
ALL CEILING FANS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL
All ceiling fans are not created equal, especially when it comes to size, weather resistance and speed. When determining which fan to buy for your room, in addition to appearance, consider these three things:
Location – Ceiling fans are separated into three location ratings: indoor-rated, damp-rated (not for direct moisture) and wet-rated (good anywhere outdoors, including in the rain). While you can use wet-rated fans anywhere inside or out, you cannot use indoor-rated or damp-rated fans in wet locations.
Width – On average, ceiling fans start at 36 inches wide, however, fan widths can be smaller or larger, depending on style and blade size. The best way to determine the right size fan for your space, is to take your room dimensions (square feet and ceiling height) to a local ALA-member showroom to see the most appropriate and functional options.
Motor type – Ceiling fans come with either an AC or DC motor, which determines how the fans’ power usage and capability.more
HIGH-TECH FIXTURES PUSH STYLE BOUNDARIES
The myriad advancements in technology are making it easier for designers to create pendants, sconces and chandeliers that push horizontal and vertical boundaries. Slim, flat fixtures evoke a contemporary attitude and showcase the versatility of LED technology. Geometric designs feature circles, squares, rectangles and hexagons with built-in or exposed bulbs that highlight each fixture's graphic shape. And sputnik-style chandeliers embrace the eclecticism of mid-century, modern style.more
ELEVATE YOUR OUTDOOR SPACE
The time for backyard barbecues, afternoons at the pool and hours of summer fun is here. If you’re fortunate enough to have an outdoor space that lends itself to one of these activities, you know style and comfort can make all the difference when it comes to hosting this summer. Of course, as temperatures rise, sometimes a break from the heat inside is necessary, so creating a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces becomes more important than ever.
Layer your light
As with indoor lighting, layers of light in your outdoor space will take your design to the next level. Ambient, task and accent lighting can be achieved in a variety of ways outdoors, but don’t be afraid to look to your inside space for inspiration. You can add all the interior comforts to your patio or deck by including outdoor-safe chandeliers, sconces and even lamps.
Keeping consistent
Your fixtures don’t have to match exactly to tie your indoor and outdoor spaces together but maintaining a consistent style or finish can aid in a seamless transition. If your indoor space is very modern with sleek lines and metallic finishes, look for the same style in your outdoor fixtures. One trend that’s making it even easier to tie different designs together is that of two-tone finishes. This allows you to add new colors and style to your outdoor space, while paying homage to your indoor design. more

2. Setup
Many showrooms set up light displays so you can better understand illumination and controls (often called light labs).
3. Service and experience
Showroom professionals look at every aspect of lighting, from placement to installation, which may mean looking for savings that aren’t apparent to the untrained eye. For example, they’re able to gauge the number and type of recessed fixtures needed for a particular space.

QUICK LIGHTING MAKEOVERS TO FIT EVERY LIFESTYLE AND BUDGET
Whether you're looking for a five-minute fix, or you've got a little more time and money to dedicate to an update, you can make an impact on your home through a lighting makeover. With the help of your local ALA-member showroom , you can easily incorporate one of these ideas into your home.
Five-minute fix
Switch out one of your light bulbs for an LED. We love this quick lighting fix for a couple of key reasons. LED light bulbs use less energy and last longer than their incandescent counterparts, so in the long run, they will save you both time and money. To best match the look of a traditional incandescent light, look for an LED with a 2700 Kelvin rating.
Small change, big impact
If you've got a little more time to dedicate to your lighting makeover, think about picking out new shades for each of your fixtures. A trained professional at a lighting showroom can help you find the right size and style. Textured options such as linen add interesting contrast. Or use your shades to pick up on an accent color in a room. Switching out a few shades in one of your rooms won't break the bank, and it can make a big impact on the design of your space. more
ADDING FUNCTION WITH LIGHTING
When it comes to lighting design, spaces not typically seen by guests sometimes do not get the attention they deserve. Household jobs are easier to tackle in an organized, well-lit space.
The laundry room, for example, requires adequate task lighting to be most functional. It is important to make sure the lighting in this room does not create distracting glare and shadows. Under-cabinet lighting may help illuminate darkened areas. An overhead light source is also a must.more
CURATING COMFORT WITH CUSTOM LIGHTING
You start and end almost every day in your bedroom, so shouldn't it be the place where you feel most comfortable? Through expertly curated fixtures and beautiful layers of light, your bedroom can quickly become your favorite room in the home - and not just because it's where you get your beauty rest.
Overall Illumination
The ambient, or general lighting in your bedroom is important for day-to-day activities, such as getting dressed or cleaning. You'll want a substantial, overhead fixture such as a chandelier or ceiling fan with a light kit to provide this key illumination. Your light level needs throughout the day and for different tasks will also vary, so it's a great idea to put this type of fixture on a dimmer.
Tools for the Task
As we said, your bedroom is not just for sleeping. It's comforting to lay down in bed after a long day and read a book to unwind. Placing fixtures at seated height, such as sconces or lamps, provides optimal task lighting in your bedroom. It's okay to think outside the box here too, consider hanging pendants at eather side of the bed to free up bedside table space and make a stunning design statement.
Stylish Accents
Don't let your carefully chosen decor and artwork go overlooked in your bedroom. Adding accent fxitures, such as small lamps or wall fixtures to highlight artwork, truly puts the finishing touch on a bedroom retreat. Placing these on dimmers will also allow you to adjust the light levels to create a spa-like atmostphere in the evenings or a bright, cheery space in the morning.more
CONSIDER TASKS AND STYLE WHEN SELECTING BATHROOM LIGHTING
Often overlooked, bathroom lighting is more than simply a functional light source. Lighting in a bathroom is obviously key for providing proper illumination for specific tasks, such as makeup application and shaving. Yet, the confines of such a small space make bathroom fixtures all the more noticeable and impactful on overall style and ambience.
When selecting lighting for a bathroom, consider the tasks that will take place in that particular bathroom. For example, is it for everyday use, just for kids, a powder room for guests?more
INSIDE AND OUTSIDE LIGHT AFFECTS TV VIEWING
When lighting a media viewing space, it is imperative to consider all sources of light. Natural light from outside is as influential as light from indoor fixtures. Multi-purpose spaces generally have windows, which create the need to control that light during the daytime as well as at night when even minor reflections can be distracting.
Motorized shades are a convenient and effective way to manipulate ambient light. Just as important as your light source is the time of day and season, all of which affect the amount of light coming in as well as the angle and intensity of the light. New wireless dimmers easily attach to a wall or simply sit on a tabletop. Designed for simple do-it-yourself installation, the inexpensive devises can be synced to a phone, making it easy to control lights, window shades and room temperature with the touch of one button. HIT RESET WITH A KITCHEN LIGHTING UPDATE
Ready for a redo? Many homeowners resolve to kick start a new year by making improvements to themselves as well as their home. When it comes to home renovations, the first place on which most people focus their attention is the kitchen. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), popular trends in finish-outs and appliances are impacting kitchen lighting choices.
In general, kitchen design is trending toward the contemporary side. Jeff Dross, corporate director, education and industry trends for Kichler Lighting, explains that homeowners with previously traditional taste are looking for more transitional products, while transitional homeowners are moving toward a soft contemporary décor, and many of those with existing soft contemporary furnishings are switching to a more austere contemporary solution.
Countertops Impact Lighting
While granite is still used in entry- and mid-level homes, most highest-end countertops are now quartz-based, particularly with a matte finish, also sometimes called suede, honed or leathered. The matte finish trend alleviates the tricky business of providing adequate illumination in kitchens without causing glare from glossy countertops that have been popular for the past decade.more
NEW TRENDS TO BRIGHTEN YOUR HOME IN 2018
The beginning of a new year is an opportunity for a fresh start for your home. One easy change that will make a big impact is a lighting update. Simply changing a fixture – a chandelier, a few pendants or even just a table lamp – can give a room a whole new look. Whether you are considering a minor update or a major renovation, stay on top of the latest lighting trends with a few tips from the American Lighting Association (ALA).
Mix and Match
Your home is a reflection of your style and personality. Create your own look by bringing in fixtures of various styles and finishes.
“One of today’s popular design trends encourages individuals to create unique lighting designs by mixing and matching their favorite fixtures within the same space,” says Jennifer Kis, director of marketing communications for Progress Lighting. “There is no need to feel limited by fixtures, or even finishes, in one particular collection. Coordinating complementary pieces creates a cohesive feel to the home, while also reinforcing the homeowner’s design style.”
Lighting manufacturers are making it easier for homeowners to select fixtures that work well together by offering collections that feature details and finishes complementary to a range of fixture families.more
USING LIGHTING TO LET YOUR PERSONAL STYLE SHINE
Your bedroom is the perfect place to let your personal style shine, and the right lighting can provide the perfect finishing touch to your space. Whether your style leans towards more traditional, or you prefer clean lines and modern finishes, there are endless options.
Because the bedroom is a space where its critcal to have layers of light to adjust to your needs throughout the day, it's a particularly fun room to light. You'll first want to consider the sources of light you need. Most people perfer an overhead or ambient light source; task lighting on the bedside table and in other areas, such as a reading nook; and accent lighting to highlight your design choices. Once you've chosen the lights you'll need in your room, you can start planning.
Don't be afraid to get creative and think outside the mold when lighting your bedroom. While many people like to have a ceiling fan above their bed, if this is not a requirement for you, a stunning chandelier can add style and serve as a decorative focal point in the room. You could also consider hanging a small chandelier or grouping of pendants over an arm chair in your reading nook to add extra visual interest. Pendant lights can also serve as a unique task light option when hung over your bedside table in place of a lamp. more
THREE TIPS FOR FUNCTIONAL BATHROOM LIGHTING Set the tone with proper bulb temperature, color and placement
Whether getting dressed, shaving, applying makeup or styling your hair, there are a variety of important tasks that take place in the bathroom mirror. Therefore, the quality of light in the bathroom is more important than ever. There are a few key aspects to your light bulbs you want to consider when choosing bathroom lighting:
1. Temperature - Use bulbs between 2700 - 3000 Kelvin color temperature for an appealing, warm tone.
2. CRI - This stands for color rendering index. To see the subtle colors of skin, makeup, hair and clothing, a CRI of 90-100 is best.
3. Placement - Even the best bulbs can be rendered ineffective if your light fixtures are poorly placed. Avoid unsightly shadows and glare by lighting mirrors on each side.
Today, all bulb packaging contains a label to help you determin the Kelvin and CRI. However, if you are confused about which bulbs to buy or how best to light your bathroom, a trained lighting professional is your best resource.

TOP LIGHTING TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL DINING ROOMS
When planning your dining room lighting, keep these easy tips in mind.
FIRST STEP: A chandelier in the middle of the room defines the space. Choose that fixture first, then work out with accent lights.
HANGING AROUND: Choose a chandelier with a diameter 12 inches less than the width of your table. The bottom of the chandelier should be 30 inches above table.
TALL ORDERS: For ceilings nine feet or higher, consider a two-tier style chandelier to fill the space from the fixture’s top to the ceiling.
DIMMER SHIMMER: Always use a dimmer on dining room lights. Light becomes warmer as it is dimmed.
HOME WORK: For those who use the dining room as a study area, consider bringing in a portable study lamp to brighten up the workspace. Overhead lighting may work well for general studies, but in depth or close work
demands more light.
GET SMART: Consider using a smart dimmer to easily manipulate various layers of light. Press a button for dining, another for shining light on homework, another for party time.
THE LAYERED LOOK: Use multiple layers of light in the dining room. Chandeliers provide the central focus. Accent lights on either side of the chandelier and at the room’s perimeter brighten the room when necessary. Accessory lights fill in shadows and add to the ambience. more
MAXIMIZING PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH OFFICE LIGHTING
Proper office lighting is key to setting the stage for a productive workday. Whether setting up the lighting for a home office or adding touches to a public office space, it is critical to ensure the lighting provides optimal working conditions.
General lighting should be bright enough to provide for a comfortable workspace, but not so bright as to create undue glare off of your papers or computer screen. If your desk is in the center of the room, consider using two large LED ceiling fixtures on each side of your desk or four 6" recessed fixtures evenly spaced in the room with two of the fixtures aligned with either side of your desk. For glare reduction, avoid placing the fixtures immediately in front of your desk.
Adding layers to office lighting is also important. Especially in windowed offices, as the outdoor, natural light changes throughout the day, it can aid in productivity and eye comfort to be able to adjust lighting by turning on or off accent fixtures or dimming overhead fixtures.

DECORATIVE TRENDS IN KITCHEN LIGHTING
One of the most popular lighting layouts in kitchens is the use of shaded or hooded chandeliers above an island. Whether the island is used as prep space or seating, the shades provide glare control and reflect light down to where it is needed. Pendants and chandeliers come in a variety of styles. Currently, the biggest trends in kitchen aesthetics fall into six primary style categories:
Rustic – natural materials with a national park meets Central Park flair
New classic – timeless and simple; elegant without being overly ornate
Industrial – back to basics with simplicity and a well-made utilitarian feel
Geometric – unique shapes and myriad designs add dimension and drama
Glamorous – luxurious materials and a little sparkle (or a lot) turn boring into bold
Schoolhouse globes – old can be new again, whether it’s restored vintage or new with nostalgic design
A trained professional at an ALA-member showroom can help you figure out what style is right for you! Spoiler alert - it might not be the one you're thinking! At ALA we encourage everyone to go in with an open mind when you visit a showroom. The possibilities are becoming endless with the advent of LED lighting, you might be surprised at what you see!more
GIVE YOUR HOME A FACELIFT WITH NEW LIGHTING
To give your home’s exterior a fresh look, upgrade your outdoor lighting to complement existing landscaping and architectural elements. The same principles used for lighting your home’s interior apply for the exterior. You still need a mix of general, task and accent fixtures to get a comprehensive lighting design. While general lighting might be an overhead light with a few torchieres for accent, you can add path lights to serve as task lighting to help guests safely maneuver walkways. You can also draw attention to the unique architecture or outdoor features of your home with spotlights and floodlights, such as those highlighting a water feature or statuette. Your plan does not have to be complicated. One simple exterior fixture can provide an ambient glow. GET THE RIGHT LIGHT IN YOUR DINING ROOM
Today’s dining rooms reflect consumers’ changing lifestyles. Once solely for daily dining, this room has become more multipurpose. During the week, many homeowners now use the dining room as a task area for homework, crafts and meetings. On the weekends and special occasions, it is a gathering place for parties and meals. Consequently, dining rooms must be versatile with multiple lighting options that can go from functional to fashionable in the flick of a switch.
To get the best balance of illumination in the dining room, opt for layers of light. A dining room does not look well-lit if the only light source is a chandelier. One main fixture bright enough to illuminate a room will be too bright for comfort when dining.
When choosing dining room lighting, start with a chandelier in the middle of the room, and then work out with accent lights, such as sconces or recessed lights. The final layer of light should fill in the shadows around the room’s perimeter. Consider wall washers, recessed lighting in the corners, or portable fixtures like torchieres or buffet lamps. Also think about in-cabinet lighting for buffets or hutches to highlight china or artifacts.
With the various layers of light, your dining room will have the ability to perfectly illuminate whatever occasion or activity is taking place in that space.more
MAXIMIZE YOUR VIEWING EXPERIENCE
Whether your TV is in the family room, dedicated media room or even an outdoor living area, everyone's viewing experience will be optimized with proper lighting. Poor lighting can be a distraction to relaxing family time and make viewers physically uncomfortable. Your investment in a high-definition big-screen TV and a quality sound system will be diminished if your set-up does not include proper lighting. Whether your space needs recessed cans with a pair of sconces or some other lighting configuration, an ALA-trained professional can recommend the best lighting products for your media room. The variety of fixtures available makes it easy to create a functional space that fits your budget and style.more
USING LIGHTING TO CREATE AN OUTDOOR OASIS
You don't have to plan a lavish vacation to relax this summer. With the right lighting, your back yard can become your own private retreat, allowing you to enjoy a mini getaway without leaving your home.
It's easier - and less expensive - than you might imagine to transform your existing patio, deck or pool area into a space you'll love. A new lighting scheme can turn your back yard into an oasis by enhancing your existing outdoor furniture, landscaping and other amenities.
Layer Your Lights
Just like with indoor lighting, outdoor lighting is most effective when it utilizes overhead, task and ambient light sources. Even outdoors, where there are not typically boundaries and borders, those three layers will enhance enjoyment and help define smaller sitting and entertaining areas as though they are outdoor rooms.
Add Decorative Elements
While functionality is the top priority, aesthetic elements are also important for creating the most relaxing and inspiring setting. Focus on lighting that highlights architectural and natural details, as well as other decorative elements like arbors, pergolas, patios, etc.
Consider Safety
An updated outdoor lighting scheme will extend your patio entertaining hours. While you'll enjoy the extra time in your outdoor oasis, creating a safe space to enjoy into the evening is also important. Don't neglect walkways and other safety features when lighting your back yard. You can also enhance home security by placing lights near entrances and in dark corners. Make sure to aim lights away from the door so as not to blind people as they enter your outdoor area.more
WHO SAYS BATHROOMS CAN'T BE LUXURIOUS?
At the end of the day, there’s nothing better than retreating to a luxurious, spa-inspired bathroom. You can create that same feel in your own bathroom with the right fixtures.
Decorative sconces, pendants, even chandeliers are popular in master bathrooms. If hanging fixtures over a tub, be sure they are at least 8 feet above the highest portion of the edge of the tub, including a 3-foot radius around the tub. Be sure to add dimmers to give your fancy fixtures the ability to soften the mood and create the perfect atmosphere. Get all the safety facts and see the latest fixtures at your local ALA showroom.more
ADD FUNCTIONAL STYLE TO YOUR HOME OFFICE
Office spaces are the perfect place to blend style with functionality. A stunning chandelier can add an unexpected element to a room, but it's not all about design. A high-quality, beautiful chandelier can also provide functional lighting to an office space.
Chandeliers add flare and a decorative focal point to almost any room in the house. They have traditionally been used in the dining room but are now commonly used in various rooms all around the home. Part of what makes chandeliers so great is their ability to serve as both a light source and a work of art. Adding a mid-century modern or intricate, traditional chandelier over a desk can completely transform and set the stage for an office.
Personal style will mostly determine what chandelier works best for your office; however, there are some other things to take into consideration. If your office features recessed lighting, the chandelier will not have to serve as the main source of ambient lighting, meaning you don't have to focus as much on light output. If the office space only features one overhead light fixture, you'll want a chandelier that provides plenty of illumination. Consider putting your chandelier on a dimmer either way so you can control the amount of light throughout the day. It is also important to consider furniture placement and the location of your computer or other workspaces to avoid glare or shadows.more
WATTS UP WITH LUMENS?
Until recently, shopping for light bulbs involved primarily focusing on wattage. After 2012, when the Department of Energy set standards specifying how much energy light bulbs can use, things became slightly more complicated.
Surprisingly, the tried-and-true wattage measurement we were all using to shop for light bulbs really wasn't telling us about the most important aspect of the bulb - how much light it puts out. Watts measure how much electricity is used by the bulb, not the bulb's light output.
However, for years, this wattage measurement was sufficient for determining which light bulbs to purchase. This is because the light output from incandescent bulbs is so similar across the board, it was easy to connect the wattage of a bulb with about how bright the bulb would be.
Today, we are faced with more options in light bulbs, from halogen incandescent, to CFLs to LEDs. These newer bulbs require less energy to produce the same amount of light, so wattage is no longer a reliable way to gauge the brightness of a bulb.
This is where lumens come into play. Lumens are the measurement of the amount of light put out by a bulb. A standard 60-watt incandescent bulb produces around 800 lumens of light. For an LED to produce about the same amount of light, only 9 watts are required. While this seems tricky, it's not as difficult as it sounds. Use this helpful visual, provided by the American Lighting Association's Lighting Planning Guide, produced with Bravo Business Media, to determine how many lumens you need in order to match the wattage of your traditional incandescent bulb.more
USING WALL SCONCES FOR STYLE AND FUNCTION
Wall sconces are incredibly versatile lighting fixtures. While they are often used to add flare to a room, they can also serve very practical purposes. As a result, they are a great choice to add anywhere in your home.

Where you hang your sconces depends on the lighting design you hope to create and the space in which you’re working, as they can be used for ambient lighting, task lighting or accent lighting.
If you are working in a large space, such as a living room, you may want your sconce to contribute to the room’s overall lighting – or ambient lighting. If this is the case, your sconce will work best when paired with a type of overhead lighting. Place your sconce, or sconces, where the overhead lighting does not reach.
If you want to feature something unique in a room, such as a piece of art or a musical instrument, wall sconces can also be used as accent lighting to steer people’s eyes towards those special items. To create some nice balance, buy two of the same sconce and hang them on either side of the item you wish to highlight, as shown in the image by Hubbardton Forge accompanying this post.more

TIPS FOR LIGHTING YOUR OUTDOOR SPACES
This weekend marks the start of daylight saving time. As we welcome longer days and warmer weather, now is the perfect time to start thinking about updating your outdoor space.
Outdoor lighting serves a variety of purposes, from safety and security, to adding style and interest to your home or garden. While daylight saving time means more hours of sunlight in the evenings, it is still important to consider your outdoor lighting design, especially if you plan to entertain guests over the spring and summer months.
Highlight Your Home
Adding landscape lighting to your home is a great way to increase curb appeal and functionality of your outdoor space. When applied properly, landscape lighting can truly change the way your home appears. Techniques such as grazing, shadowing or silhouetting serve to add visual interest by highlighting the natural beauty of your home and yard.
Light the Way
It is critical to consider your walkways and entryways when developing an outdoor lighting plan. Illuminate walkways and paths with light that is cast downward and with fixtures that are hooded. When lighting your entry, make sure to consider the size and placement of your fixtures. Scones or lanterns placed at either side of the doorway, as shown in this post's photo by Kichler Lighting, are more inviting and provide an even distribution of light.more
LIGHTING WITH LAYERS
When developing a lighting plan for any room in your home, it is important to consider the three basic types of light - ambient, task and accent. The best lighting plans combine all three types to light an area according to function and style.
Ambient Lighting
Ambient lighting, or general lighting, provides an area with overall illumination. Ambient lighting radiates a comfortable level of brightness without glare and allows you to see and walk about safely.
Various types of fixtures can provide overall illumination to a room, including chandeliers, ceiling fans with light kits, wall-mounted fixtures, and recessed or track lights. Having a central source of ambient light in all rooms is fundamental to a good lighting plan.
Task Lighting
Task lighting is exactly as it sounds, it is incorporated to help you perform specific tasks, such as reading, grooming, preparing and cooking food, doing homework, working on hobbies, etc. Task lighting can come from recessed and track lighting, pendants, undercabinet lighting, as well as portable floor and desk lamps.
Task lighting should be free of distracting glare and shadows and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain. As with all lighting in the home, it is best to put task light sources on dimmers, so that you can adjust the levels of light based on your specific needs.more
TIPS FOR PICKING A LIGHT BULB
With the options available today, choosing a light bulb has become slightly more complicated for the average homeowner. If you find yourself wondering what bulb you need, here are a few tips to consider.
Know What's Available
There are three basic types of light bulbs available today:
- Halogen Incandescent
- CFL (Compact Fluorescent)
- LED (Light Emitting Diode)
The halogen incandescent is very similar to the traditional household incandescent bulb, except that it is somewhat more efficient.
The CFL is more efficient still, but its use is expected to decline due to the growing popularity of LEDs.
Today, the LED bulb is the most efficient, long-lasting, and often, the most suitable for home lighting. The new models can look very similar to traditional incandescent bulbs, and can even be decorative, such as the bulbs in the image by SATCO accompanying this post. The slightly higher up-front cost of these bulbs is mitigated by their very long life.
Consider the Following
If you're looking at light bulb options, it is important to take into consideration these aspects:
- Lumens - How bright is the bulb?
- Color - Is the light form the bulb a warm 2700K or a cool 4000K?
- CRI - Does the bulb render colors beautifully? 80+ is good, 90+ is great!
- Dimming - Can I use the bulb with a dimmer switch? What type of dimmer is compatible?more
RETHINKING YOUR BATHROOM LIGHTING DESIGN
Your bathroom is where you typically start and finish your day, so creating an inviting space can set the tone for a great day and a restful night's sleep. Unfortunately, many homeowners are left uninspired by their bathroom lighting design.
Where to Start
With bathroom lighting, you need to first think about the types of lighting fixtures you want to use. Many home designs use recessed LED light fixtures for overall illumination. This will illuminate your bathroom space efficiently, and adding dimmer switches will allow you to control the mood immediately.
Additionally, think about your sink and bathroom mirror. This is the area where you do most your work to get ready in the morning. You need bright and vibrant lighting to ensure you don't leave home with smeared lipstick or toothpaste in the corner of your mouth.
Move Away from the Traditional
If you're uninspired by your bathroom lighting design, try something completely fresh and new. Instead of standard exposed light bulbs above your bathroom mirror, try adding wall sconces to each side of the mirror, as demonstrated in the photo accompanying this post by Hubbardton Forge.more
LIGHTING YOUR HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The right decor lighting this holiday season can help your guests appear more photogenic, boost their mood and make an amazing display.
When people think of the holidays, they think of string lights, glowing angels and motion-sensor reindeer. What about interior lighting? Your holiday decor shouldn't be limited to garland and a few cranberries.
We're here to help you bring some of the holiday magic inside this year.
Creating Gathering Spots
When hosting a holiday event, it is important to have plenty of cozy spaces throughout your home where family and friends can meet and mingle. Whether you want to create gathering spot for all your friends and family, or a more intimate conversation space, a distinctive, light-directing fixture is a great way to draw in your guests. You can define a space with something as simple as two chairs and a torchiere, a spotlight aimed toward a corner sofa, or a pendant grouping above a table. The photo featured here from Quoizel, Inc. demonstrates lighting that draws guests in and invites them to sit. For maximum effect, also consider an eye-catching chandelier to attract your guests to your main entertaining area.more
SELECTING THE RIGHT CHANDELIER
A longtime lighting staple of dining rooms and foyers, chandeliers are gaining popularity in unexpected places. This classic lighting piece can be found in kitchens, bedrooms, walk-in closets and even bathrooms.
Not only are these eye-catching fixtures a great source of ambient light, they can also serve as a focal point around which you can build the design of an entire room.
If you're considering installing a chandelier, here are a few tips to help you select the perfect fixture for your space.
Consider the Unexpected
Traditionally, chandeliers have come with layers of crystals or twinkling candles; however, the modern chandelier is available in myriad styles. For example, the Eurofase chandelier pictured here offers a unique take on the traditional crystal chandelier. You may also opt for a Victorian-inspired fixture with glass shades, or a funky sunburst mid-century piece. More eclectic chandeliers are made of unexpected materials such as wooden twigs, animal antlers, intricate wire work, shells or even paper.
Size Matters
Chandeliers are natural focal points of a room, but if you don't select a size that matches the scale of your room, the design can fall flat. Furthermore, a chandelier that is too small for your room will actually make a space look smaller. A good tip is to measure the room's length and width in feet, and add those measurements to determine the correct diameter of the lighting fixture. For example, if your room is 14 feet wide and 18 feet long, the diameter of your chandelier should be at least 32 inches. However, it is also important to consider the size of the furniture in the room. For more information on determining the correct size of a fixture, bring your room measurements into an ALA-member showroom and speak with a professional.more
'TIS THE SEASON...FOR LEDS
Your interior lighting design has a huge impact on mood, productivity levels, sleep quality and more. It shouldn't be surprising then how important your home lighting is to a successful holiday.
With their versatility and energy efficiency, LED lights offer an array of options to light your home for the holidays. However, because LED lighting is relatively new to the residential market, it can be confusing when trying to implement this technology into your home. The holidays are not the time to play the guessing game, so consider this information when updating your bulbs and fixtures to LED.
Warm vs. cool light
Color temperature is measured in Kelvins and impacts how a light appears. Lights perceived more yellow or orange are considered warm, while cooler lights appear more blue or white. The higher the color temperature, or Kelvin, the cooler the light will appear. LED lights come in a variety of color temperatures and some can even be adjusted. If you're looking for the traditional, incandescent glow for the holiday season, like the Legrand lights featured in this image, look for a bulb with a color temperature around 2,700 to 3,000K.
Decorative LEDs
When incandescent light bulbs first started to be phased out of the market, many homeowners were left disappointed by the visual appearance of their new light bulb options. LEDs have solved that problem. Whether you need a bulb with a traditional shape to place into your lamp, a candelabra bulb for your chandelier, or even a filament-style bulb, there's an LED out there for you.more
MAKE YOUR MEDIA SPACE MORE ENJOYABLE
The holiday season is right around the corner, which makes this the perfect time to spruce up your home before entertaining friends and family. Whether your guests are coming just to watch the big game or to stay for an extended period of time, your media space will no doubt be a popular gathering spot. The American Lighting Association suggests a few ways to enhance everyone’s viewing experience.
No matter what kind of space you have, whether it’s a dedicated media room, a simple TV nook or something in between, the fundamental components are comfort and appropriate lighting. For the majority of homeowners, most media-related activity takes place in a multi-use space, which means the lighting must have the flexibility to go from everyday activities to TV viewing. For example, this featured image from Nora Lighting, demonstrates a variety of light sources set on dimmable switches, creating a flexible environment.
“One of the primary design objectives in a media space is to create the ability to achieve multiple and varied types of experiences, and lighting provides the key element to achieve that goal,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, AIA, IES, education consultant for ALA and associate professor at the University of Kentucky's School of Interior Design.more
THE BEAUTY OF DECORATIVE LIGHTING
Decorative lights are the unsung heroes of great lighting design. These statement fixtures are important in conveying specific design themes, and can also be used in light layering.
Choosing light fixtures can be a complicated task. Lighting and ceiling fans are crucial in not only the functionality of the rooms in your home, but also the design. Decorative light fixtures come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can help you fulfill the important task of including layers of light in your design.
Typically, decorative lights play the role of adding a layer of adornment to the area of choice. Although often small, they can have a big impact on the overall lighting design of a room. For instance, the WAC Lighting fixtures in the image here offer a unique style element to the room.
Three-in-one
Whereas general lighting is often out of view, in the form of recessed cans or flush mounts, decorative lighting is meant to be seen. Often, decorative lighting can even serve as the focal point in the room, think a beautiful, large chandelier.
Just because decorative lights are chosen for their aesthetics, does not mean their dimensions and purpose can be ignored. Decorative lights can serve as ambient, accent or task lights, depending on how they are used. For example, a beautiful floor lamp can also serve the purpose of illuminating a reading nook, making it more functional.more
STAY COOL WITH A CEILING FAN AS STYLISH AS IT IS FUNCTIONAL
No longer do you have to choose between comfort and design when it comes to your home. Once thought of as purely utilitarian, today's ceiling fans offer sophisticated styling, designer finishes and glamorous accents.
According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), ceiling fans are a unique home cooling option, as they blend aspects of both form and function to improve comfort while enhancing home décor. Indeed, there are many ceiling fan models available that can serve as an eclectic centerpiece for any room, without sacrificing cooling air movement.
Modern features, such as single-blade fans, as shown in the accompanying photo by Fanimation, allow homeowners to get the necessary performance while having an array of style options that can be seamlessly entwined with their home's interior design. Whether modern with clean lines and minimal ornamentation, traditional with classic features, or something in between, the newest and most popular fans on the market today include the latest technology capable of moving the maximum amount of air around a room.
"The better fans are quieter, more efficient and have better airflow, and are offered in the most on-trend finishes," says Sean Lavin, chief design officer for Generation Brands, parent company of Monte Carlo Fan Co. "Most popular with consumers are hugger fans, which are mounted close to the ceiling, as eight-foot ceilings become more of the standard ceiling height. Also, as consumers continue to learn about the light performance and energy benefits of LED lamping, they're looking for fans that use LEDs."more
FLOOR LAMPS 101: KNOW YOUR LIGHT FIXTURES
One of the main goals of home décor is to make your space inviting. The right interior lighting adds the perfect amount of warmth to any room. For interior designers, a major point of direction will often be your home's lighting design. With numerous styles to pick from, it can be overwhelming to decide how to best light up your home.
Floor lamps can be a little tricky to perfectly incorporate into your home's design. Here are some simple tips to make floor lamps a significant part of your home lighting:
1. Look to Small Spaces
Floor lamps can provide additional ambient lighting in a room or act as task lighting for reading and other activities. Floor lamps truly shine when it comes to adding layers to your rooms lighting plan.
Using these fixtures in small places such as a reading nook, a dining room corner or entryway can bring extra brightness to your home's lighting. As shown in this photo by Kichler Lighting, these fixtures boost the amount of light while taking up a small amount of space.
2. Don't Forget to Measure
Floor lamp fixtures and lampshades need to be properly measured so you know they will fit perfectly in your home. Avoid eyeballing floor lamp sizes and shapes. Instead, measure the fixture so you know where it could fit in your home before you buy it. A trained lighting professional in an ALA showroom can help you with this process.more
FIVE COMMON LIGHTING MISTAKES TO AVOID
While there are plenty of ways you can bring new life to your home through lighting design, there are also some common mistakes to avoid.
If there seems to be a void or a piece missing in your home's lighting design, here are five common lighting mistakes to consider:
1. No Control Over Your Lights
It might sound simple enough, but light dimmers, motion sensors, timers and automated systems all help you stay in control of your lighting. When you're unsure if the room is too dark or too bright, dimmers help you solve the problem with a middle ground. Moods change, and so should your lighting. Additionally, having better control of your lights will help you save on your energy bills. The track lighting in this photo by WAC Lighting are fully adjustable and allow the homeowner to control the levels of light throughout the day.
2. Light Fixture is Not the Right Size
Another common mistake in home lighting design is using the wrong sized fixture. For example, when homeowners use too small of a chandelier in the dining room or bulky desk lamps in the living room, everything can seem disproportionate.
The best way to prevent buying irregular fixtures is by measuring them in the showroom and consulting a trained lighting professional before purchasing. Eyeballing is tough in showrooms because fixtures tend to look smaller with the larger space of the room. However, a lighting expert will be able to help you avoid purchasing something that won't work in your space.more
BRINGING THE OUTDOORS IN: NATURAL ELEMENTS IN HOME DÉCOR
One of the bigger trends in home design is using natural elements to bring the outdoors inside. It's a design aesthetic that people have tried to perfect for generations, as organic looks and elements tend to create a serene environment in the home.
At the same time, bringing home lighting designs into your organic and natural décor can be a tricky task to tackle. However, there are some ways to get you moving in the right direction - toward efficient and practical lighting - while still maintaining the natural elements in your home.
Simplicity Brings Peace
For many people who want a calm and peaceful home, removing the clutter is usually the first priority. Organic designs are often simplistic, which means your lighting design should follow suit.
For example, try hanging two pendants in a natural material over your bedside tables, rather than placing a lamp. This eliminates clutter on the table, while maintaining functionality.
Use Organic Material for Your Backdrop
Another way people effectively bring organic themes into their home is with a natural element for the backdrop. This could be in the form of a reclaimed wooden wall to stand out among the rest of the home's design. This will add texture and color to any room, which will ultimately make the lighting design easier.more
HOW LEDS ARE TRANSFORMING INTERIOR DESIGN
The shift toward LED light bulbs in interior design is happening quickly, as manufacturers and homeowners find more ways to use these new types of lighting inside common areas of homes.
LEDs come in a wide variety of hues and colors that can transform an ordinary bathroom into something that will give you an artistic experience when you get ready for work in the morning.
According to The Wall Street Journal, not only are LEDs extremely efficient and effective at reducing home electricity costs, but they are allowing light designers to get more creative with interior lighting. Instead of standard track lighting with incandescent bulbs, homeowners can now use LED light bars or undercabinet lighting to adjust to the exact color or mood of your desire.
Smaller Light Resources
Piero Gandini, chairman of Flos, a lighting design firm, said LEDs simply give more options than standard light resources.
"It's similar to what happened in the 80s, when halogen arrived," Gandini explained. "Everything became smaller. Design will be less and less about the fixture itself and more about the immaterial aspect of lighting."more
HALLWAYS, ENTRANCES AND FOYERS: LIGHTING YOUR HOMES TRICKIEST SPACES
Entrances, hallways and foyers all have a major commonality: These spaces are typically the focal point to the entrance of your home. Guests are greeted in these areas and you use the spaces as a means to get to other rooms throughout your home.
While these spaces are one of the first you and your guests will see upon entering your home, they can be some of the harder spots in a house to light. These areas are difficult because most foyers or entrances are not alike, which means you have to take into account the design of your home.
Creating a Grand Entrance
If you're looking for the right fixture to fit in your entryway or foyer, you need think about the size of the light and the open space available. Chandeliers are a great source of light for these tricky architectural areas, and they give guests a majestic entrance into your home. Typically, you want to calculate this exactly, Hinkley Lighting Inc. explained.
Hinkley recommends that, for chandlers in foyers, you should add the length and width dimensions of the entrance area and convert the total area to inches.more
MAKE A STATEMENT WITH YOUR KITCHEN LIGHTING
Artificial light is a necessary feature for home kitchens. In this space, you work with sharp tools and depend on your eyes to chop, read labels, inspect food and to clean up afterward. With so much importance on kitchen lighting design, you have to be practical. However, this shouldn't limit you from making a bold statement in your kitchen.
Since each kitchen is different, you have to ensure your lighting design is optimal for your particular space.
Find the Focal Point of Your Kitchen
Because each kitchen is different, you want to make sure you focus on the focal point of your kitchen. These areas include a kitchen island, kitchen table, dining room table or a cooking space.
You simply want to focus on whichever area is the most important. If you don't have room for a table or kitchen island, your cooking area would be the biggest focal point. However, if you have an island and a small kitchen table, you might want to focus on the island instead of your small kitchen table.
Pendant Lighting Options
For the most part, pendants are great in kitchens because they provide general illumination that spreads light effectively. Pendants tend to make kitchen spaces seems bigger as well (which is critical if you are working with a small space). However, there are a couple variations of pendant lighting fixtures that can be used in a kitchen.more
